A cradle, which is also known as a bassinet, is used for very young babies, i.e. between being born and being 4 to 5 months old, as a bed for them to rest and play in. It is made with a lot of materials, metal, wood, and now mostly plastic. They are designed in a way that the bed in which the baby sleeps can be rocked or swinged, which generally has a very calming effect on young babies and they easily go off to sleep. They are available in lots of styles and designs, and are especially of two categories; the light and portable ones, and the sturdier but less portable ones. They can be used according to the convenience of the parent, with a higher stand so that they wouldn t have to bend much while tending to the baby, as an example. Some of these cradles can also be converted to prams or carriages for the babies so that they can be carried around easily. It is always advised to use soft but firm mattresses for the baby inside the cradle so that the baby is not at any risk. And he or she should always be attended to in case the baby is old enough to roll over by himself and maybe at the risk of falling off the rocking bed.
