Dial watches: The dial is the face of the watch. It serves as a background with numbers or indices that the hour, minute, second and other hands can point to. It also serves an aesthetic function when balanced against the hands, bezel, case, and band or bracelet to define the design and aesthetics of a given timepiece.
Classically, dials have been white or black with sharply contrasting indices and hands for maximum visibility and legibility. Today many dials are crowded or clumsily designed in attempts to cram more and more information onto the watch face. Sometimes this results in obvious problems such as chronograph sundials that are unlabelled, numbered or indicated to give a sense of scale.
On the face of the watch, there are many different ways that a dial can be marked. The below shows some of the most popular types:
Arabic & Stick having both numerals and stick indicator markers. Arabic having only has numeral indicator markers. Stick Dial has no numeral indicator, only marks or dots Roman & Stick Dial has both Roman numerals and stick mark indicators. Roman dial only has Roman numeral mark indicators. California dial consists of half Roman and half Arabic numerals.
