Banarasi Sarees are beautifully designed using silver and gold brocade. By mixing and artistically combining persian and indian styles, these sarees are decorated with small motifs and booties across the length of the fabric. The designs which are made, using zari, gold and silver brocade are usually inspired by the mughul era, such as the kalga and bel, the intricate intertwining floral and foliate motifs. Banarasi sarees mostly come in bright tone colours like Pink , Orange, Green and Red with combination of Gold or silver border respectively.
Banarasi sarees are generally worn during grand and festive occasions. Now-a-days, banarasi sarees have been designed to a next level for the fashionable young indian women. Using fabrics like net and jacquard, the classic banarasi sarees have been upgraded to Banarasi lehenga saree, giving it a lehengas choli feel. These are mostly worn by young generations.
Depending on the type and designs , a single saree takes up to 15 days to complete . And the once's that are designed with heavy motifs and embroidery usually takes up to six months . Many grandmothers have passed on their Banarsi silk sarees over the generations.
